Global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed Matt FitzGerald (pictured) as the firm’s new Joint Managing Partner for its Global Corporate Practice and the Australia Regional Head of Practice, effective from 1 May 2024.
Matt FitzGerald, based in Brisbane, will succeed Carolyn Pugsley, who will be returning to full-time practice after serving in the role for four years. FitzGerald will collaborate with Mike Flockhart, the Corporate Managing Partner based in London, UK, to steer the strategic direction of the corporate practice across the firm’s global network of offices.
Matt FitzGerald brings extensive experience to his new role, having been a partner since 2009. Specializing in Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) in financial services and private equity, he has advised both listed and private companies, as well as financial sponsors, on various M&A transactions, strategic alliances, and joint ventures.
Having held several leadership positions within the firm, including as Office Managing Partner for the Brisbane office, FitzGerald is well-prepared for his new responsibilities. He also deputized as Regional Head of Practice for Carolyn Pugsley during her parental leave, demonstrating his capability and versatility within the organization.
Ian Cox, Executive Partner, Practices at Herbert Smith Freehills, expressed confidence in Matt FitzGerald’s leadership abilities. Together with Mike Flockhart and other Regional Heads of Practice, Alberto Frasquet and Andy Blacoe, they form a strong team poised to build on the corporate group’s successes.
Cox emphasized the firm’s commitment to further developing its market-leading global practice and driving forward the approach necessary to achieve the firm’s Ambition 2025 strategy.
With a specific focus on Australia, Matt FitzGerald will lead the corporate team to continue growing the firm’s reputation as the go-to law firm for major M&A deals. Additionally, he will support the increasing demand in mid-market M&A deals across the Asia-Pacific region.
Expressing gratitude to Carolyn Pugsley for her significant contribution to the firm’s market-leading position, Ian Cox conveyed the firm’s anticipation of continuing to build on the success of the corporate practice as she returns to full-time legal practice.
In response, Matt FitzGerald expressed excitement about taking on the critical role and leading the market-leading team. He looks forward to working closely with Mike and his colleagues to achieve the next stage of their strategic plan and deliver outstanding results for their clients.
