Key Appointments Strengthen Gowling WLG’s MENA IP Team

Gowling WLG is expanding its intellectual property and technology (IP and Tech) practice in the Middle East with the appointments of Bachir A. Chakra (pictured left) as a partner and David Aylen (pictured right) as a consultant.

Chakra will be based in Riyadh and will lead the firm’s IP and Tech practice in Saudi Arabia, collaborating closely with Al Ghazzawi & Partners, Gowling WLG’s strategic partner firm in Saudi Arabia. Chakra brings extensive regional and international experience to the role, having previously worked at top law firms and in-house roles in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Singapore, and Canada.

Aylen, a longstanding member of Gowling WLG’s global IP group, will transition from the Toronto office to join the Dubai office as a consultant. Aylen will contribute to the growth of the patent and trademark practices in the UAE, focusing on developing international clients, particularly from the US. Recognized internationally as a leading IP lawyer for over a decade, Aylen has received accolades from prominent IP publications.

Jon Parker, Head of Gowling WLG’s MENA IP practice, is delighted to welcome Chakra and Aylen to the firm. “David’s vast experience will be invaluable for us, at a time when the UAE is fast-tracking its innovation landscape,” said Parker.

Tim Casben, Head of Gowling WLG’s offices in the Middle East, expressed his enthusiasm for the new additions to the team. “Bachir’s background is extremely complimentary to a number of our core areas of focus in the region and we will benefit from his experience in the KSA market in IP, Media, and Tech.”

Gowling WLG is committed to expanding its IP and tech practice in the Middle East, and these appointments are a significant step in that direction. The firm is also investing in its other core practice areas, including corporate, energy, and infrastructure.
