DIFC Courts introduce blockchain-based verification for court documents

The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts have introduced blockchain-based credentials that allow recipients to verify the authenticity of court orders and hearing records within seconds, including across international borders.

The documents carry a unique, nontransferable digital authenticity credential based on non-fungible token (NFT) technology and recorded on the Avalanche C-Chain, a public blockchain. The system is designed to enable banks, government authorities, courts and other counterparties to confirm that a document was issued by the DIFC Courts and has not been altered.

Under the system, a cryptographic fingerprint of each digital document is linked to its corresponding credential. Recipients can check the document against the credential, with any alteration to the file causing verification to fail. The document itself, along with its content and confidential case information, is not stored on the blockchain.

The comment

His Excellency Justice Omar Al Mheiri (pictured), director of DIFC Courts, said: “Confidence in the authenticity of a court document should not depend on geography. By enabling a recipient to independently verify the source and integrity of a document within seconds, we are extending trusted digital infrastructure beyond the physical boundaries of the Court. For international businesses and court users, this provides an additional layer of certainty when judicial documents are presented across institutions and jurisdictions. It reflects our continued commitment to developing secure, practical and future-ready court services, while supporting the objectives of the Dubai Digital Strategy and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.”

The system expands the DIFC Courts’ existing use of distributed ledger technology. Notarisation transactions carried out through the DIFC Courts Notary Service are recorded on Hedera, while the new document verification system uses the Avalanche C-Chain.

Deca4 Advisory, the DIFC Courts’ blockchain technology partner, designed and implemented the system, which has been integrated with the Courts’ existing document infrastructure.
